Harry Kane scored twice as England came from behind to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over DR Congo, booking a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 at the Atlanta Stadium.
The match produced early drama as DR Congo took a shock lead in the seventh minute. Chancel Mbemba advanced from defence and delivered a long ball into the box, which fell to Brian Cipenga. The winger still had work to do but fired past Jordan Pickford at his near post to give the Leopards the lead.
England responded strongly after the first hydration break, creating several chances. Aaron Wan-Bissaka cleared off the line to deny Marcus Rashford, while Lionel Mpasi produced a key save to keep out Jude Bellingham.
DR Congo also went close, with Yoane Wissa striking the post from close range.
Kane thought he should have been awarded a penalty late in the first half after going down under pressure from Mpasi, but appeals were waved away by the referee.
England eventually found their equaliser after the second hydration break. Substitute Anthony Gordon delivered a precise cross into the box, where Kane rose above Axel Tuanzebe to head home and level the score.
Momentum shifted in England’s favour, and 11 minutes later Kane struck again. He collected Gordon’s pass at the edge of the box, turned sharply, and fired a powerful finish past Mpasi to complete the comeback.
Despite spells of dominance, England struggled for rhythm in large parts of the game, with their wide players largely subdued. Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, and Marcus Rashford all found it difficult to make an impact, though Gordon stood out with two assists after coming off the bench.
Kane, however, proved decisive once again, further extending his remarkable international record and underlining his importance to the Three Lions’ campaign.
The victory sends England into the Round of 16, where they will face Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.
