The University of Ghana women’s football team delivered a dominant performance, defeating the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) women’s team 6-0 in their second match of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games.

The match took place on Saturday, January 11, at the St. Peter’s Regional Seminary, Pedu (Pedu Seminary) Park.

Patience Attachie opened the scoring for UG just 8 minutes into the game. Defensive midfielder Abigail Basu then made a spectacular long-range effort that was initially saved by UMaT’s goalkeeper. However, Eva Amoako pounced on the rebound to make it 2-0. Genevive Boakye then made a brilliant run down the right flank and delivered a perfect low cross, which Eva Amoako finished to make it 3-0 by the 13th minute. Elizabeth Boateng followed up with a superb solo effort, beating defenders before finishing with a clean strike into the net. Basu then capped off a dominant first half by scoring from a beautifully curled free-kick to make it 5-0 at the break.

Just minutes into the second half, Susan Abah delivered a brilliant through pass to Genevive Boakye, who converted it with a well-executed right-footed strike, making it 6-0. UMaT failed to register a single shot throughout the match.

Lydia Anowa Nyako-Danquah, UG’s Director of the Academic Affairs Directorate, graced the match with her presence and shared some words with the team after the game

Abigail Basu, who played a pivotal role by creating several goal-scoring opportunities, credited her coaches and teammates for her performance.

“First of all, thanks to my teammates and coaches. I’m motivated to play because we want to win the ultimate. Winning 6-0 against UMaT is not an easy task, so I give thanks to God, my teammates, officials, and everyone who came to support,” she said.

Head coach Tahiru Yusif Amuda acknowledged that the team’s early jitters in their opening match were due to the GUSA Games being in their early stages. However, the team’s motivation and preparation paid off against UMaT.

“The first match was just the beginning, but this one shows that we are progressing. The girls were motivated, and we psyched them up well. They came out and delivered. Everybody saw and enjoyed their play,” he noted.

The UG women’s football team will face fierce rivals Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on January 12 in their next match, hoping to maintain their impressive form.
