Singer, writer, composer, and producer Asiama, born Emmanuel Asiamah Mensah, says his music journey has been one of patience, resilience, and divine timing.
Speaking on At The DJ’s Mercy on September 12, 2025, the Seventh-Day Adventist and soul musician revealed that he began singing at the age of four in church, leading an a cappella group. But for him, the turning point came at just 12 years old when he auditioned for X Factor.
From frustration to breakthrough
Asiama recalled how difficult his early recording experiences were, explaining that he never felt satisfied working with producers on his first album.
“I would go to different studios and they would produce stuff for me, and I wasn’t too happy about it. I was like, man, this is not what I want. I’m very personal about my music — it needs to be exactly how I want it, so it was hard working with me. Eventually, I had to learn how to produce myself.”
Interestingly, during that period, he would often dream of working with celebrated Highlife composer Kwame Yeboah.
“I used to say, Charlie, if I get someone like Kwame to be on my work, that would be really cool. And two years later, just like that, he reached out to me on Instagram and said, ‘Bro, come to the studio.’ I was like, Wow.”
Before that life-changing Instagram message, Asiama had been performing live band music with the Characters Band, serving as a backing vocalist for Ghana’s biggest stars, including Sarkodie, Efya, and King Promise. He believes it was through these performances that Kwame Yeboah discovered him.
Working with Kwame Yeboah
Describing the partnership, Asiama called the experience “beautiful” and “everything he expected.”
“With him, he is very patient. He doesn’t overlook things; he sees what I don’t see, and he teaches me. He’s disciplined, fun, and always willing to share knowledge freely. You can’t be around him and not learn.”
Asiama also defended Yeboah’s bold claim on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, where the legendary producer described himself as the world’s best Highlife musician.
“Of course! Who else? People misunderstood what he said. He was emphatic: he said musician, not just vocalist or singer. Kwame is a whole composer, producer, instrumentalist, everything in one. If he says he’s the best, it has to be understood in that context.”
New single On My Way
Asiama is currently promoting his latest single On My Way, produced by Kwame Yeboah. He explained that the song is deeply rooted in themes of patience, self-discovery, and personal growth.
“Basically, it’s about self-discovery and working on yourself. For me, it’s patience. The song is not just for me, it’s for people to enjoy, so it has to get out there and make the impact it was created for.”
He added that On My Way and his earlier single Akoma are building up to a major project he plans to release soon.
“Definitely, this is all a build-up to a project. There will be a new song dropping right after the video for On My Way comes out. We’re going to start rolling it out soon.”
With his rich vocals, heartfelt songwriting, and mentorship under Kwame Yeboah, Asiama is carving his space as one of Ghana’s most promising soul musicians.
