Samartex defender Isaac Afful earns maiden Black Stars call-up

FC Samartex defender Isaac Afful has been named to the Black Stars squad ahead of the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sudan.

The Ghanaian defender, who played in the Ghana Premier League, was part of the Samartex squad crowned champions of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season.

The 25-year-old joined Samartex in the 2022/23 season, playing 21 games and scoring one goal. Afful continued his consistency with the Timber Giants in the 2023/24 season, featuring in 22 matches and helping guide them to the Ghana Premier League title.

Isaac Afful has earned his first call-up to the Black Stars squad, alongside Kumasi Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Frederick Asare, who has been with the team for some time. Other foreign-based defenders include Mohammed Salisu, Abdul Mumin, Alexander Djiku, Tariq Lamptey, Kingsley Schindler, Jerome Opoku, and Alidu Seidu.

The Black Stars of Ghana will face Sudan in the first leg of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers on October 10th at the Accra Sports Stadium, before travelling to Libya for the return leg on October 15th, 2024.
