The outgoing President of the 66th University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Frank Tsikata, has announced that the council has secured official approval for a Telecel Monthly Data Package aimed at providing affordable internet access for students.

Speaking during his second State of SRC address on Friday, September 20, 2024, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, Tsikata revealed that the initiative will offer students a data package for just GHS 10.50 per month, designed to ease the cost of internet access for academic purposes.

“We’ve received official approval for the Telecel Monthly Data Package, where students will be billed at GHS 10.50 per month. We initially hoped to launch it this semester.”

He noted that while the package could be rolled out as soon as this semester, the final decision rests with university management. However, Tsikata emphasized that the initiative will definitely be implemented by next semester at the latest, ensuring students benefit from it within the current academic year.

“The approval came a bit late, so management is still deciding whether to roll it out this semester or next. However, it will not extend beyond the next academic year.”

The package, aimed at reducing the financial strain of high internet costs, is expected to enhance students’ access to online learning platforms and university resources. Students are eagerly awaiting the rollout, anticipating significant savings in their monthly data expenses.
