As the University of Ghana gears up for the UGSRC elections, Radio Univers conducted an initial online poll on August 12, 2024, providing an early glimpse into the race for key student leadership positions.

The poll, which drew participation from thousands of students, highlighted the leading contenders for President, General Secretary, and Treasurer.

In the presidential race, Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah, widely known as “Manuel Life,” alongside his running mate Lawrence Edinamegleh, has emerged as the clear favorite. The duo secured 4,470 votes, representing 62.5% of the total 7,149 votes cast.

Their closest rivals, Maradona Adjei Yeboah, also known as “Guru NKZ,” and Adu-Yeboah Jeffery, received 2,486 votes, accounting for 34.8%.

Noah Nii Afotey Odai and Abigail Obenewa Adai placed third with 124 votes (1.7%), while Blessing Mantey and Martin Agbefia trailed with 20 votes (0.3%).

The contest for General Secretary is proving to be a closer race. Deborah Febiri-Damoah currently leads with 46% of the 977 votes cast, totaling 449 votes.

Her nearest competitor, Lorinda Owie Teyehugmeh, garnered 381 votes (39%), with Duodu Constance Faith in third place with 147 votes (15%).

However, with no candidate surpassing the 50% threshold, a run-off election may be required, as outlined in Article 30, Clause 7 of the UGSRC Constitution.

In the Treasurer race, Roland Oppong has established a strong lead, securing 54% of the 983 votes cast, which translates to 531 votes. Kankam Jonathan follows with 374 votes (38%), while Michael Arhin Ansah and Eugene Adjei-Quaye received 49 votes (5%) and 29 votes (3%), respectively.

The initial poll results suggest a strong showing for Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah and Roland Oppong in their respective races. However, the final poll, set to be conducted 48 hours before the main elections, will provide a clearer picture of the candidates’ standings. With the possibility of a run-off in the General Secretary race, the upcoming UGSRC elections promise to be a competitive and closely watched event.
