Ghana’s representatives in the Confederation of African football (CAF) champions league, Medeama SC and representatives in the Confederations Cup, Dreams FC were both defeated by North African opponents in their respective CAF competitions.
Medeama SC who are representing Ghana in CAF’s tier 1 African Competition, CAF champions league, made their tournament bow in the most difficult circumstances.
The Tarkwa-based side’s debut fixture in the competition saw them travel to the North of the African continent to take on defending champions, Al Ahly. The defending and record champions of the CAF champions league, gave Medeama a fair share of continental football; Mamhoud Kahraba, Hussein El Shahat, and Salah Mohsen’s strikes handed Al Ahly a 3-0 victory and a perfect start to their trophy defense whiles Evans Adortey and Medeama will take positives from their first half display where they managed to keep the game scoreless.
Medeama will undoubtedly rely on their more experienced players if they are to sail through the group phase, of which goalkeeper Felix Kyei is inclusive; his 9 saves recorded against Al Ahly on Matchday 1 is the most of any goalkeeper in the tournament so far.
In spite of Medeama falling a day before to North African opponents Al Ahly, Dreams FC could do little in suffering similar fate a day after.
The still believe lads were beaten by North African giants Club Africain De Tunis. The holders of Ghana’s MTN FA cup were no match for the relentless Tunisian outfit who enjoyed a routine 2-0 victory.
Dreams FC will look to gain some momentum ahead of the upcoming CAF confederation cup games, but will need to do so in the Bet Pawa premier league when they face Accra Hearts of Lions.
