A Medical Officer at the Out-Patient and Public Health Department of the University of Ghana Hospital, Dr. Tsion Dinku has revealed that a significant majority of breast lumps are non-cancerous and harmless.Speaking recently on the “Good Health” show on Radio Univers, Dr. Dinku revealed that between 60 and 80 per cent of all breast lumps are benign, meaning they are solid growths that are not malignant.
Dr. Dinku defined a breast lump simply as, “any growth that is a bit solid and feels unusual compared to the surrounding breast tissue or breast mass.”
She stressed that while the discovery of a lump can be alarming, most cases do not lead to cancer.
”Fortunately, 60 to 80 percent of lumps in the breast are benign,” she stated. “They don’t spread to surrounding tissues; they are not malignant, in other words.”
She further clarified that benign lumps are not exclusive to women, explaining that they can occur in both men and women at any stage of life.
This expert advice serves to reassure the public that, though any unusual change should be investigated, the likelihood of a breast lump being non-cancerous is overwhelmingly high.
