The University of Ghana women’s football team defeated Women’s Division One League side, Ridge City FC, 3-1 to conclude their training sessions ahead of the 2024 Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games, set to begin on January 3.
Ridge City broke the deadlock early with a sensational right-foot strike, but UG women quickly found their rhythm, equalising and then taking the lead to make it 3-1.
The thrilling match took place at the UG main field on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, where the UG women showcased their determination to end their camp on a high note.
The first friendly match UG women played ahead of the GUSA Games had been a disappointing 5-1 loss to Jonina Ladies, another Division One League team. Head Coach of the UG women’s team, Tahiru Yusif Amuda, popularly known as Coach Alhaji, emphasised that the result of that game was not his main concern, as it was still early in their “preparation.” He expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance in the match against Ridge City, noting that their tactical play had improved.
“The last match, I told you that we are still in preparation for GUSA. Our first match, losing 5-1, I said the scoreline didn’t matter. I’m not focused on the scoreline today either; I’m focused on the tactical play we taught them, and they were able to implement it. I’m very happy,” he said.
In his final remarks, Coach Tahiru made a bold statement, declaring that the team’s goal is nothing less than the gold medal.
“We are not looking at anything apart from the gold. That’s our target, and we are working tirelessly towards it,” he added.
UG women’s winger, Amoako Eva Offin, scored two goals and provided an assist in the game against Ridge City. In a post-match interview with Univers Sports, she admitted that her performance surprised her.
“I’m very excited. I didn’t believe I could put up such a performance. I really pushed myself,” she said.
With only a few days left until the GUSA Games, Eva urged her teammates to give their all in the quest to secure the gold medal for the premier university.
“I’m expecting my team to push hard so that we can win the gold for our school,” she said.
The University of Ghana team will depart to Cape Coast on Friday, January 3.
