The Progressive Alliance for Ghana (PAG) led by its presidential candidate, Dr. John Kpikpi, has officially withdrawn from the presidential race due to difficulties in meeting the Electoral Commission’s (EC) requirements for participation.
In a press release, PAG revealed that despite the hard work of its nationwide teams, the party faced several unexpected challenges that hindered its ability to meet its self-imposed standards and the EC’s criteria for candidacy. The leadership, after extensive consultations, made the decision to withdraw from the race, emphasizing the need to focus instead on supporting its parliamentary candidates.
“We have decided to withdraw our Presidential Nomination for Election 2024 to focus on our parliamentary candidates. We fully expect to contest the 2028 election at all levels to deliver our best for Ghanaians,” Dr. Kpikpi stated.
Initially, PAG intended to field 20 parliamentary candidates but faced systemic obstacles, reducing the number to six. The party is now working to forge alliances with other like-minded parties and independent candidates as it pivots toward parliamentary elections. PAG is also deliberating on which presidential candidate it will endorse for the 2024 election.
The party’s leadership criticized the two major political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for what they described as environmental destruction and mismanagement, vowing to continue working at the grassroots level to bring about meaningful change.
“The level of irresponsibility of NDC and NPP, who have spearheaded the total destruction of our environment, as well as endangering the health and water supply of millions of Ghanaians, should not be allowed to continue,” the statement read.
Despite the setback, PAG encouraged the youth of Ghana to remain hopeful and engaged in the political process. The party is calling on Ghanaians to vote in the upcoming election to end what it sees as decades of corrupt practices and misgovernance under the NDC and NPP.
