Spain beat Austria 3-0 to advance to the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup

Spain powered into the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 with a commanding 3-0 victory over Austria on Thursday, July 2, 2026, in Los Angeles, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring twice to lead La Roja’s dominant display.

Pedro Porro also got on the scoresheet as Spain controlled proceedings from start to finish, while Austria failed to register a single shot on target and were comfortably eliminated from the tournament.

Spain, widely tipped among the favourites, began the competition with a surprise goalless draw against Cape Verde but have since improved with convincing wins over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay to build momentum heading into the knockout stages.

Despite pre-tournament predictions favouring sides like France and Argentina according to Opta’s model, Spain delivered a confident performance to underline their credentials, even against an underwhelming Austrian side.

The victory also extended Spain’s unbeaten run against Austria and ended a long wait for a World Cup knockout win, their first since the 2010 final triumph over the Netherlands.

While much attention has been on Spain’s attacking stars, it has been their defence that has stood out, with Luis de la Fuente’s side yet to concede a goal in the tournament.

However, concerns remain over the fitness of Lamine Yamal, who is still working his way back to full sharpness following a hamstring issue.

Spain started brightly, with Yamal testing Austria’s defence inside the opening minute. Marc Cucurella also came close in the 29th minute during a goalmouth scramble, but his effort was ruled offside.

The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when Oyarzabal redirected a low cross into the net to give Spain a 1-0 lead.

Pedro Porro doubled the advantage in the second half with a well-placed header from inside the box before Oyarzabal sealed the win late on, finishing off a low cross after a defensive lapse.

Spain dominated statistically, registering 23 shots compared to Austria’s five, with the Austrians failing to test the goalkeeper.

The result continues Spain’s strong tournament run, having scored eight goals without conceding and losing only twice in 45 matches under head coach Luis de la Fuente.

Spain will now face the winner of the Portugal vs Croatia Round of 32 clash in the next stage.
