LaLiga side Villarreal have officially announced the signing of Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey on a two-year deal.
The former Arsenal player joins the Yellow Submarines after the expiration of his contract with the North London club.
Partey’s arrival makes him the second Ghanaian to play for Villarreal, following in the footsteps of Mubarak Wakaso, who had a brief stint with the club during the 2011–2012 season.
The move has sparked backlash from a section of the club’s supporters. Partey is currently facing legal charges related to an alleged rape case in the United Kingdom.
He appeared in court just a couple of days ago and is expected to face further legal proceedings in the coming months.
In response to the public concern, Villarreal issued a statement stressing their belief in the principle of “innocent until proven guilty.”
The club said it conducted internal checks before completing the deal and is confident in its decision to sign the midfielder.
Partey returns to Spain after five years with Arsenal, where he made over 100 appearances and helped the club secure a return to Champions League football.
Prior to that, he enjoyed success at Atlético Madrid, including a UEFA Super Cup triumph in 2018.
On the pitch, manager Marcelino views him as a key figure in strengthening the midfield ahead of a busy season. But the timing and context of the move have stirred heavy debate.
