A joint burial service was held over the weekend for the nine school children who drowned in Faana, an island community in the Greater Accra Region, on Wednesday, May 10, 2023.
The service took place on Sunday, May 14, 2023, and was attended by hundreds of people, including family members of the deceased.
During the service, the victims were given a mass burial, and many government officials, such as the Municipal Chief Executive for Ga South, Joseph Nyarni, and Member of Parliament for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro, Silvester Tetteh, were present to extend their condolences to the families.
The tragic incident occurred when the nine school children were on their way home from school and the boat they were travelling in capsized in an estuary.
Twelve people were on board, including the boat owner. Three individuals managed to swim to safety, but unfortunately, the rest of the passengers, including the school children, drowned.
None of them were wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident.
The entire community has been left in a state of mourning as a result of the incident.
The boat owner is currently in police custody to assist with investigations.
At the joint burial service, a mother who lost two of her children sat in disbelief as she gazed at their coffins.
