University Teachers Association of Ghana branch at the University of Ghana (UTAG-UG) have voted in favor of a motion directing the National Executive Council (NEC) of the UTAG to declare a strike.

The internal election, which was held today, February 5, 2024 was intended at deciding on whether UTAG-UG should mandate the UTAG’s NEC to announce a nationwide strike.

Out of the 1,250 expected voters, the total vote cast was 520. 433 people who participated in the election voted in favor of “YES” representing 83.3% while 82 voted “NO”, representing 15.8% of the voters. Five (5) of the votes were abstained (1.0%).

The Electoral Commissioner who supervised the election, Prof. Innocent V. D. Lawson signed to approve the decision of the UTAG-UG mandating the NEC of UTAG to declare an industrial action.

The turn of events precedes an earlier meeting UTAG had held with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) on January 10, 2024.

UTAG walked out of a meeting claiming that the FWSC acted in bad faith and contempt with regards to their conditions of service and tier-2 pension allowances. UTAG had then threatened to embark on a strike provided their grievances are not taken heed to.
