The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has announced that it will embark on industrial action if the government fails to address a number of outstanding conditions of service and welfare concerns affecting its members.
The Association cited the government’s failure to sign the Interim Salary Adjustment Agreement despite the successful conclusion of negotiations, persistent challenges relating to post-retirement contract renewals and academic staff rollover following the reversal of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) directive, and the outstanding government component of the Online Teaching Support Allowance (OTSA) for Research Fellows and Academic Librarians, among other critical issues.
In a statement dated June 19, 2026, UTAG said it had given the government until June 30, 2026, to resolve the issues or risk industrial action.
“The National Executive Council (NEC) of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has given Government until 30 June 2026 to resolve a range of outstanding conditions-of-service and welfare matters affecting members across Ghana’s public universities,” the statement read.
According to UTAG, if the outstanding matters are not satisfactorily resolved by June 30, 2026, all branches of the Association will, within five working days after the deadline, begin consultations to secure the necessary mandates from members for appropriate industrial action in accordance with the UTAG Constitution and the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).
