Prince Stephen Bentil, President of the Student Representative Council (SRC) at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has attributed the school’s disappointing performance at the 2025 Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games to limited student access to sports facilities on campus.

Speaking on Campus Exclusive, Bentil expressed dissatisfaction over UPSA’s showing at the Games, which were hosted by the University of Cape Coast earlier this year.

“With the sports facilities, access to them is sometimes a headache, and it’s preventing our students from actively participating in sporting activities—apart from football,” he said.

However, he pledged to turn things around by increasing support for all sporting disciplines, including volleyball, lawn tennis, and table tennis, to encourage broader student participation.

He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to revitalizing campus athletics by investing in underrepresented sports and ensuring equal attention is given to all disciplines.

“But then, we seek to uplift all other sports disciplines such as volleyball, lawn tennis, table tennis, and the rest. Looking at the recent GUSA Games, UPSA performed abysmally compared to other schools, and that’s not what we want,” he added.

Aiming to enhance UPSA’s standing in university sports, Prince Stephen Bentil expressed his ambition to position the school among the top-ranked institutions in future GUSA Games.

“We want to be part of the top-performing schools when it comes to the GUSA Games. That’s why we’re working to ensure that our student-athletes are at their best—so that when we go there, we can proudly say, ‘Yes, UPSA is here.’”

Whether these ambitions materialize will ultimately depend on sustained student engagement and strong institutional support.
