Management of the University of Ghana has released the final approved schedule of fees for the 2022/2023 academic year.
The new fees schedule has seen further increments from the last provisional list released a week ago.
From the provisional list, College of Humanities Freshmen were to pay GHC 1,813 for an academic year.
However, that has now been increased to GHC 2,069 constituting a percentage of 14.12.
Also, GHC 184 has been added to that of College of Humanities Continuing Students raising the amount from GHC 1,340 to GHC 1,524 constituting a 13.73% increment.
Level 100 Law students will also not pay GHC 1,914 anymore but rather, GHC 2,185 constituting a %14.16 increment.
The University earlier in a notice told students that the provisional fees were an interim measure and were that of 2019/2020 which was approved by parliament but were not implemented due to the impacts of COVID-19 on parents.
“As you may be aware, University of Ghana did not implement the fee increases approved by Parliament for the 2019/2020 academic year. The main reason for deferment of the fee increases at the time was to avoid exacerbating the financial impact on parents of the pandemic which had just begun.
However, due to the increasing cost of operations and the fact that Parliament has not as at today, 13th December 2022 approved fees for the 2022/2023 academic year, it has become necessary for the University to implement the 2019/2020 approved fees as an interim measure.”
Meanwhile, Ranking Member of the Education Committee in Parliament, Hon. Peter Kwasi Nortsu-Kotoe has stated that no educational institution can increase their academic fees by more than 15%.
Speaking to UniversNews, Hon. Nortsu Kotoe revealed that, although an annual increment is allowed, an increase that exceeds 15% is against the “Fees and Charges Act”.
“The passed fees and charges act which are all fees that were brought before the Finance Committee, and I remember very well that as part of the recommendations or the act it was that fees can be increased by 15% every year. By law, no institution is to increase fees by more than 15%. So, if an institution or organization increases, fees and charges above 15%, is a violation of the law and that is what the students’ unions have brought to our notice. And we agree with them by law, law no institution is to go beyond the 15%,” he said.
