Legon Leo Club supports campus sanitation with the donation of 10 dustbins to the University of Ghana

The Students Representative Council (SRC ) Vice President of the University of Ghana, Ebenezer Derrick Gyampo Ayeh, has commended university management and the Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate (PDMSD) for their continuous efforts in improving waste management on campus.

He made the remarks in an interview with Univers News during the 27th anniversary celebration and commissioning project of the Legon Leo Club on Saturday, January 24, 2026.

The Legon Leo Club, founded in 1998, is a youth wing of Lions Clubs International that focuses on community service, leadership development, and social responsibility among young adults aged 18 to 30.

Its activities include humanitarian projects in areas such as environmental sanitation, vision care, hunger relief, diabetes awareness, and dental health.

Gyampo described management’s commitment to waste management as “a step in the right direction,” citing the visible placement of dustbins across campus, including those designated for recyclable plastics.

“In relation to waste management, I would want to applaud management and PDMSD because a lot has been done. On campus, you get to see dustbins all around, including those meant for plastics which can be recycled. I believe this is a step in the right direction in paying attention to waste management,” he stated.

He added that waste management at the University of Ghana is not a major challenge but emphasized the need for stricter supervision of personnel responsible for emptying the dustbins when they are full.

He assured that the SRC would play an active role in ensuring improved sanitation on campus.

“Waste management at the University of Ghana is not really a problem; it is just that there should be more focus on those in charge of emptying the dustbins when they are full. As the mouthpiece of the students, the SRC will make sure those responsible do what is expected of them so that sanitation on campus is improved,” he said.

The SRC Vice President also expressed appreciation to the Legon Leo Club for donating ten dustbins to support waste management, particularly in the various traditional halls on campus.

He noted that the initiative would significantly contribute to improving sanitation within the university community.

“As representatives of the student body, we want to say thank you for this act. We believe it will go a long way in supporting waste management in our traditional halls. We are very grateful to the Legon Leo Club,” he added.
