The majority leader of the University of Ghana Parliament House (UGPH), Justice Alor, has denied claims of the petition presented by his caucus to parliament, on December 8, of having any political intent.
Speaking to Univers News, he intimated that the was solely in the interest of university students to intervene in a supposed increment in academic and residential fees for the 2022-2023 academic year, and that there was no political inclination whatsoever in the petition he presented to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin.
I still agree that in as much as we are all students, we are all pursuing student interests in one way, or the other people also have personal interest in things to the extent of somebody saying that the petition is political. There is no way I mentioned any government appointees name or any individual of this particular government. So, I don’t know where that is coming from, to the extent of people saying that this will not hold. They are people I call “naysayers”, he said.
He further revealed that the University of Ghana Parliament House is not against an increase in fees, but the increment should be between 10 to 15 percent.
Yes, we are not against an increment, we know an increment is something that is necessitated by law. There can’t be an institution that for many years, will not have a system of generating revenue or resources to manage the affairs of the institution. That’s why in the release of our petition, we stated that even if there will be an increment in this particular year, it shouldn’t exceed a 10 to 15% increment, he added.
