The Public Relations Officer of the Electoral Commission at the University of Ghana, Mudassir Ibn Ibrahim, has explained the reasons behind the absence of Electoral Commission officials from the strongroom at the University of Ghana Computing Systems (UGCS) since the commencement of polling this morning.
This clarification follows reports of the absence of the Electoral Commission and its team. The situation stems from the postponement of the University of Ghana Student Representative Council (SRC) elections due to an interlocutory injunction placed on the process.
Speaking to Univers News, Mudassir revealed that the commission had not received any official communication from management regarding the situation, after reaching out to management. This has raised concerns about potential legal consequences and the legitimacy of the ongoing electoral process, prompting their decision not to participate in the elections.
“Currently, what we are trying to prevent is infringement and facing legal consequences going forward. So we’ve been informed that action on such court cases or lawsuits would lead to some legal consequences. The Electoral Commission. I mean, we owe it to also the board or maybe the health board. We are under the school management too. So the fact that we have been sealed alongside the school management and we get asked for guidance on how to go out so that we don’t fall prey to anything because we are just under them but we have not heard from them. I mean, officially, we have not received any response from management.”
He also mentioned that the Electoral Commission does not currently have any information about what the next step will be. They are waiting for more updates before making any decisions or announcing a course of action.
“We have reached out to management, and we are awaiting their response. Well, I don’t have any information on that or what the next step is. Ask them when we have updates or just letting them know. Alright, so finally, before you take leave of us, we have to go”
