In light of recent electoral challenges in the UGSRC, the PRO Vice-Chancellor (ASA) of the University of Ghana, Prof. Gordon Awandare, has called for a comprehensive review of the UGSRC Constitution to address current issues and integrate modern practices.

Speaking on Campus Exclusive (#CampEx) on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, Prof. Awandare emphasized the importance of updating the Constitution to reflect contemporary methods and technologies.

“We have encouraged the students to update the UGSRC Constitution as it is outdated and needs to reflect current practices, such as incorporating online election processes,” stated Prof. Awandare.

“Indeed, the students have been undertaking the process of reviewing their Constitution, and we hope this will strengthen the processes, address any ambiguities, and ensure clarity going forward.”

Prof. Awandare also expressed concerns about the involvement of national political parties, specifically the NPP (TESCON) and NDC (TEIN) groups, in student elections.

“We are concerned about the active involvement of national political parties in student elections. We believe that this should be curtailed as part of the review of the SRC Constitution to implement measures that prevent interference from political parties and other outsiders. We want to encourage students to enjoy these processes without the involvement of political forces.”
