Executives of the Political Science Students of the University of Ghana have asked its members to vote for Samuel Ackom ahead of the 2022 Presidential and General Secretary Run-off elections.
The union in a press statement stated that they are throwing their weight behind the candidate due to his leadership track record.
Samuel Ackom and His Vice Presidential candidate Ramzey Ahmed Fuseini are locking horns with Martin Boakye Gyasi and Abraham Lincoln Ohene for the presidency.
The Run-off election is slated for Tuesday, November 8 from 8 am to 5 pm.
Ahead of the polls the University of Ghana Political Science Students Association endorsed Samuel Ackom and Ramzey Ahmed Fuseini and has therefore called on members of the association to vote for them as the next University of Ghana Student Representative Council President and Vice President respectively.
According to the communique, the executive of the association mentioned that the candidate has been a devoted and committed member of the association.
Five Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates went to the polls to contest for the Presidency. They were Curtis Owusu Akomeh & Linda Ackah Mensah, Martin Boakye Gyasi & Abraham Lincoln, Samuel Ackom & Ramzy Ahmed, Graham Oduro Dery & Benedict Paakwesi Bortsie and Noah Wumborbi & Kojo Ambrose.
Diana Ohene Bemah, Vida Minta, Ernestina Mahama and Emmanuella Boakye Yiadom also contested for the General Secretary portfolio.
Micheal Kuti and Edward Owusu Boateng vied for the SRC Treasurer position.
After the closing of the polls, Curtis Owusu Akomeh & Linda Ackah Mensah who were number 1 on the ballot paper gathered a total valid vote of 3,426 out of a total valid vote cast of 15,030 representing 22. 74%. Martin Boakye Gyasi & Abraham Lincoln Ohene also obtained 5,455 votes representing 36.20%. Samuel Ackom & Ramzy Ahmed also obtained a total valid vote of 3,876 representing 25.75%. Graham Oduro Dery & Benedict Paakwesi Bortsie pulled a total valid vote of 742 which represents 7.92%.
Noah Wumborbi & Kojo Ambrose had a total valid vote of 1,565 which represents 10.39%.
For the General Secretary, Diana Ohene Bemah gathered 2,612 total valid votes out of a total vote cast of 15,238 representing 17.1%. Meanwhile, Ernestina Hamdiya Mahama, Vida Minta and Emmanuella Boakye Yiadom obtained a total valid vote of 2,395 representing 15.7%, 2,865 of 18.8% and 7,146 of 47% respectively.
This makes none of the five Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates and the four General Secretary Candidates meets the threshold of 50%+1 to be declared elected. Due to this, the two leading candidates for both the presidency and General Secretary that is Martin Boakye Gyasi & Abraham Lincoln Ohene, Samuel Ackom & Ramzy Ahmed, Emmanuella Boakye Yiadom and Vida Minta are expected to lock horns for the positions in a run-off.
For the Treasure portfolio, Micheal Kuti beat Edward Owusu Boateng with a total valid vote of 7,667 which represents 52.09 % to be declared elect. While his contender lost with a total valid vote of 7,052% which represents 47.91%.
The Provision in the 2022 Constitutional Instruments and the Constitution of the University of Ghana Student Representative Council emphasises that no candidate shall be declared elected as an Executive Officer unless the number of vote cast in his/her favourites is more than fifty per cent 50%) of the total valid votes cast.
