The University of Ghana campus experienced a brief power outage on Wednesday night, February 26, at around 9:55 p.m.
The outage was caused by a fire outbreak in a small section of the Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate (PDMSD), located near Bush Canteen and the Ghana Fire Service. This prompted the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to cut power for safety reasons.
The fire started in some damaged refrigerators on the PDMSD premises. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded. Speaking to Univers News, Greater Accra Regional Fire Commander Rashid Nisawu stated that the actual cause of the fire is still under investigation but confirmed that it involved refrigerators.
“The cause of the fire is under investigation, but as you can see here, it involved refrigerators. I don’t know where these fridges came from—maybe they belong to the university. These are the items that caught fire this evening.”
The fire commander also emphasised that their swift intervention prevented the flames from spreading further, which could have posed a greater risk, especially with Bush Canteen—a campus cafeteria that uses cooking gas—located nearby.
“Seriously, if it weren’t for our intervention, the fire could have spread to the left and right, destroying all these offices. It could have even reached Bush Canteen, but we managed to contain the situation.”
Calm has since been restored, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire and prevent similar incidents in the future.
