The Management of the University of Ghana has urged persons with concerns with regard to the 2022/2023 fee increment to seek redress through the legal system.
Pro Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academics & Student Affairs (ASA), Prof. Gordon Awandare said the University is ready to defend and explain its position on the matter should the issue be taken to court
Speaking on Campus Exclusive, Prof. Awandare stated that the University will not accept any allegations leveled against them[ University Management].
The law is the law,they keep talking about 2021/2022. They [students] should ask parliament whether they have approved any fees in 2021/2022 that we should use as fees…Let’s have an intellectual discussion and not just shout and making noise.
He further the University is ready to defend its stance should the matter be taken to the court.
If students want reduction in fees let’s have that discussion but to talk about illegality, that discussion belongs to the court, and we are ready to go to court.
According to Prof. Awandare, students of the University of Ghana should reason with University Management as they find alternatives to salvage the situation.
Until then, Management will strive to ensure transparency and clarity.
`If you are accusing us[Management] of illegality, we will try until we prove that there is no illegality before we even start to revise any fees’.
The University of Ghana has defended the increases to its academic user fees for the 2022/ 2023 academic year.
In a press statement released on Monday, January 2, 2023, the University administration said “fees charged for the academic year 2022-2023 are legal and properly based on approved fee levels as permitted by Parliament.”
This follows complaints by students that the increase’s margin is intolerable because it exceeds the 15% approval granted by Parliament through the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
The University of Ghana modified fees for the 2022–2023 academic year upward by 15% based on the gazetted approved costs for the 2019–2020 academic year, university authorities stressed in a statement.
