Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo has indicated that the University will continue to take steps in ensuring an enabling environment for all members.

She was speaking at the Launch of the University of Ghana Gender Policy on 14th March, 2023 at the Great Hall of the University. The University of Ghana Gender Policy is aimed at promoting measures to achieve gender equality at all levels within the University and balance the ratio of male to female employees and students at all levels within the University.

The Vice-Chancellor called on members of the university’s community to help eradicate any form of discrimination and biases from the university. She also recognized the gender discrimination that men face in the society, implying that the university will ensure gender equality among every member of the university.

“It is crucial that the university has a policy that further enhances women rights and continue to provide a clear framework for addressing inequalities being rooted in our society. However, while promoting the empowerment of women and girls as they are initially vulnerable, we are not [unaware] of the fact that unfortunately some men suffer one form of discrimination or the other. The university has and will take steps to consciously sensitize members of the university community to ensure that we create a community free of gender bias and a community where everyone’s right is respected, a community where women will have no power to oppress men and men will have no power to oppress women. Let’s work together to forge a path that ensure women and men, girls and boys and the vulnerable all have an equal opportunity to attain their full potentials.”

The Vice-Chancellor added that the university believes in creating equal opportunities for members of the community. She noted that the university is geared at creating rooms for competent at individuals unbiased of gender or other personal factors.

“As an institution committed to the realization of Sustainable Development Goal 5 which focuses on gender equality and guided by the constitution of the republic of Ghana, we generally excused any form of discrimination on grounds of gender. The University Community believes in creating rooms for competent individuals irrespective of gender, tribe and work environment. As testament to this and for the first time in the history of the university, we have an all-female set of principal officers who are women of substance and value, who bring so much knowledge and resourcefulness into their position.”
