The Director of Sports and Wellness at the University of Ghana, Dr. Austin Luguterah, has announced plans to register the university’s football team as a platform to discover and develop talent within the institution.

In an exclusive interview with Andydotcom on Univers Sports, the newly appointed Director emphasised that this initiative will create a pathway for prospective students with athletic talent, allowing them to join and play for the team even before gaining admission to the university.

“We want to get the University of Ghana Soccer team registered; which will give us the opportunity to get talents who intend to come to the university to join it. So when you join even if you’re not admitted yet, it’s a channel for you to start playing with the team as we admit you,” He said.

He also highlighted that once students join the university’s football team, they remain part of the team even after graduation, allowing them to continue their athletic careers while being officially registered.

Even when you complete, and you still want to continue with your career, you’re still part of the team because you’re registered”

Dr. Luguterah further stressed the need for the university to benefit financially from the professional success of its athletes.

“If all our athletes are going here and there , what is UG benefitting from it ? If we have some of our players getting professional teams, at least we have some developmental fee that will drop into UG account. Until you do that, you’re serving as ‘Father Christmas’ where by you build talent and they go without you benefiting”
