The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has described the launch of the Bank of Ghana Chair in Economics and Finance as a major step toward reshaping Africa’s role in global economic scholarship.

She said the initiative will bridge the gap between local realities and global research.

“We have established a collaborative platform that embodies our shared aspiration to produce knowledge that is both locally grounded and globally resonant,” she said.

Professor Amfo argued that Africa’s monetary and financial systems have long been constrained by foreign models.

“Historically, a significant portion of Africa’s monetary and financial structures have been influenced by legacies and frameworks adapted from external sources,” she noted, adding that these frameworks “frequently fail to accurately reflect our distinct realities, aspirations, and beliefs.”

Highlighting the importance of the Chair, she said it represents a tool for innovation and leadership development.

“This represents a broad commitment to driving research innovation, fostering policy engagement, and mentoring future leaders in economics and finance.”

She also praised the inaugural chairholder, Professor Niganti Abinagili, for what she called his forward-thinking approach.

“Professor Abinagili not only possesses an outstanding academic record, but he also offers a visionary power rooted in African agency and innovation,” she said.

Reaffirming the University’s support for the partnership, Professor Amfo pledged the necessary backing for research excellence.

“As the Vice-Chancellor, I restate the University’s unwavering commitment to providing the intellectual freedom, infrastructural support, and collaborative environment necessary for the Bank of Ghana Chair and its associated research ecosystem to flourish.”
