In line with her vision to promote digitalisation across the university, The Vice-chancellor of the University of Ghana Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo has donated ten high-speed computers to the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science.

The donation is aimed at providing students and faculty members with the necessary tools to enhance their research and academic work. The Vice-Chancellor, in her address, described the donation as timely and apt for the departments and expressed hope that the computers would be put to good use.

Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo said the move aligns with the government’s promotion of digitalization and her personal efforts to promote the same at the University of Ghana.

When the issue came up that our Department of Computer Science sadly is deprived of computers, this was of much concern to me.  Management discussed and decided that we were going to support the Department. The Government of Ghana is promoting Digitalisation, here at the University of Ghana, I am also promoting Digitalisation, so this is just timely.” Prof. Amfo said.

Professor Sandow Mark Yidana, Dean of the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, who received the computers on behalf of the Departments, thanked the Vice-Chancellor and promised that the computers would be used prudently to enhance teaching and learning.

Professor Sandow Mark Yidana, Dean of the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences,

In 2020, we made a request to the University for 100 laptops, 80 to the Computer Science department and 20 to the Statistics and Actuarial Science department, so it is a good thing that we have at least received 10 computers. We will do our best to get additional ones from industry players. We promise you that this seed you have given us, will surely germinate and will yield more fruits”, Professor Yidana noted.

Also, present at the donation ceremony were the Pro Vice-Chancellor in charge of Research Innovation and Development, Prof. Felix A. Asante; Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, Professor Boateng Onwona-Agyeman; Provost of the College of Humanities, Professor Daniel Frimpong Ofori; Deputy Director at PDMSD, Peter Abalansah; Director HROOD, Dr. Yvonne Ayerki Lamptey; UTAG-UG President, Dr Samuel Nkumbaan and SRC President Martin Boakye Gyasi. Faculty, staff and students from the two Departments were also present at the ceremony.

The ten brand-new computers are equipped with the latest software and hardware, providing high-speed performance that would significantly improve the computing experience for the beneficiaries.
