The University of Ghana is set to host the 2025 West African University Games (WAUG) from October 1 to 15, marking the second time the institution will take on this prestigious role. The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the event was officially inaugurated on April 30, 2025 at the University of Ghana Stadium VIP Lounge.

The Games are expected to draw participation from approximately 40 universities across West Africa, bringing together over 2,000 athletes to compete in 18 sporting disciplines. This large-scale event aims to celebrate athletic excellence and foster regional unity through university sports.

The 16-member LOC is chaired by Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, Registrar of the University of Ghana, with Dr. Austin Luguterah, Director of UG Sports and Wellness Directorate,  serving as Vice-Chairperson. The committee includes a distinguished group of academics and professionals, such as Professors Matilda Steiner-Asiedu, George Akanlig-Pare, Mahmoud Abdulai Mahmoud, Abdallah Ali-Nakyea, and Clement Appah, among others.

Additional members include Dr. Elizier Ameyaw Buronyah, Dr. Richard Dey, and Mrs. Lydia Anowa Nyako-Danquah. Experts from the fields of sports and logistics—such as Mr. Yaw Sakyi Afari (CEO, Rite Sports) and Mr. Samuel Alphonse Etsibah (Fleet Manager, PDMSD)—will also play key roles. Mr. Augustine Amissare, Senior Assistant Registrar at the Sports and Wellness Directorate, will serve as Secretary, coordinating preparations.

Speaking to the press, Dr. Austin Wontepaga Luguterah emphasised the university’s readiness:

“This time is very special because, during our first time hosting, the University of Ghana did not have the standard facilities we do now. Today, we can boast of top-notch facilities that have already been tested. Just last year, this venue hosted continental events, including CAF programs, so both the facilities and hostels remain in excellent shape. I can confidently say we are ready,” he said.
