Students at the University of Ghana have expressed mixed reactions following MTN’s claims of customer negligence in a viral case involving an unauthorized withdrawal of GH¢11,000 from a mobile wallet.

The incident gained attention after a customer accused MTN MobileMoney Ltd. of compromising her wallet, leading to the withdrawal.

In response, the company issued an official statement clarifying that its investigations found no internal breach. Instead, MTN attributed the incident to social engineering tactics employed by fraudsters.

Speaking to Univers News, some students supported MTN’s claims, suggesting that the customer might be at fault. Others, however, questioned the company’s position, pointing to potential security flaws in the system.

“The mistake might be on the woman’s side. She could have given her code to someone. I wouldn’t blame MTN for that,” one student commented.

Another student noted, “The lady is at fault. She may have shared her PIN with someone, allowing them to access her account and withdraw the funds.”

While some students believe the issue may stem from user error, others remain concerned about the security of MTN’s MoMo platform and whether it could have been compromised.
