Some students of the University of Ghana (UG) have expressed mixed reactions to the increase in taxi fares on the University’s main campus.
The fare, which was previously GH¢12, has been increased to GH¢15 since the commencement of the second semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. The upward adjustment has sparked concern among some students, while taxi drivers attribute the increase to rising fuel prices.
Speaking to Univers Business, one student lamented the impact of the fare increment on students’ budgets.
“It affects our budget significantly because we have to take a taxi to class and back to our hostels. Paying GH¢15 each way means spending almost GH¢30 a day. They say fuel prices have gone up, but I don’t think it is a good idea because people will have to use the taxis more often. It’s not a good initiative,” a female student said.
Another student noted that there had been no prior communication regarding the increase, leaving many students unprepared.
“If students had been informed beforehand about the increase, it would have been better. We just came back and met the new fare. I don’t think it has been good for our budgets. It definitely reduces the amount of money I have available for other expenses, so I now prefer alternatives such as the shuttle,” the student said.
While some students expressed concern over the increment, another student indicated that the change had little effect on him.
“I’ve been paying GH¢15 since I came to Legon, so I didn’t even realise the fare had increased from GH¢12. The change doesn’t affect me,” he said.
The fare adjustment has generated mixed reactions among students, with many calling for better communication before such changes are implemented.
