The University of Ghana Student Representative Council (SRC) has launched its 65th anniversary with a number of activities set to take place this year.
The launch took place at the Biochemistry auditorium on Wednesday, March 22, 2023. The anniversary will be on the theme ” Celebrating six decades of students representation, the digital journey ahead”
The SRC president, Martin Boakye Gyasi addressing the gathering said the idea for the anniversary celebration was birthed to help the SRC embark on projects that will help students and improve students’ welfare.
“On 30th November, when we came into the office, we stepped on a few toes and it hasn’t been easy, the dean of students has been fantastic she’s been there to help but it came with the realization that the SRC is 65 years we are still struggling to build a hostel
What happened to our UG mobile app, can we look at turning UG into a global village, are we not putting in any effort?
We are looking at the possibility of getting students to acquire skills, how do we monitor, and how do we register, among others. All these are things we looked at and said, we need to start doing the hard work from today, so if you are part of this launch today, it is the beginning of incredible things yet to happen.” He said
The Chairman of the event, Politician and former SRC President of the University of Ghana from 1995 to 1996, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah congratulated the SRC for this feat and urged them to adopt technology and digitization in all aspects of their lives.
“65 years of student leadership is worthy of celebration and I believe that it will be an occasion for reflection for networking, and looking forward to the future and your theme recognizes that we are moving into the future, into the digital world…Digital aid provides a lot of information and opportunities for knowledge accumulation and mobilization, You can use social media, use twitter, use Instagram, use telegram among others, don’t be complacent, don’t just be there. Listen to news, build a database to your advantage, and network. When we do these things, the future will be bright for us. “
The Dean of Students Affairs Prof. Rosina Kyerematen who was also present at the launch advised student leaders to prioritize the welfare of their students and desist from affiliating themselves with political parties. According to her, these political figures are only after their votes.
“Even though we have our political persuasions, we should be thinking more about students welfare and not our political parties, now the incursion of national politics into students’ politics is so unbelievable. The last couple of elections, the V8s that were on campus, the digital vans that were moving around campus, the amount of money that was being splashed around, was frightening to think that you are students, people who are given pocket money…and you can tell me that these political parties care about you, obviously, they need your votes, after that do you see them? Think about students’ welfare, think about how as student leaders, you are going to make conditions better, for your fellow students.” She said
Prof. Kyerematen also congratulated the SRC on its anniversary and pledged the University management’s support to their activities and projects.
The SRC unveiled a logo for the celebration which was designed by Felix Appiah, a student whose design was selected after the numerous entries from the student populace.

A committee to be chaired by Edward Boateng has been inaugurated to see to the activities and planning of the University of Ghana SRC at 65.
Some of the projects outlined for the celebration include the construction of a borehole at the Mensah Sarbah Hall, the refurbishment of a TV room in Akuafo Annex A, and shade for students to rest in-between lectures to complement the Vice Chancellor’s comfort zone project among others.
