Students of the University of Ghana are preparing to head to the polls as the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) elections for the 2025/2026 academic year draw closer.
The elections are scheduled to take place from August 10 to 20, 2026, with campaign activities already underway across campus.
As aspirants engage students and outline their visions for the next administration, a familiar conversation has resurfaced: can students trust the promises made during election campaigns?
Over the years, students have expressed disappointment with what they describe as a recurring pattern of candidates making ambitious campaign promises but failing to fulfil them after assuming office.
Speaking to Univers News, some students said the lack of accountability from previous SRC administrations has weakened their confidence in campus politics.
“It has been the same story every year. They come, they promise, and after elections you don’t see them again. We just hope this year will be different,” one student said.
Another student said past experiences have made her reconsider participating in this year’s elections.
“Right now I’m confused whether to vote or not because if we vote for them, nothing changes. I don’t think I will participate in this year’s voting,” she said.
Despite the growing scepticism, SRC aspirants have intensified their campaigns across campus, engaging students and appealing for their support ahead of the elections.
Some aspirants, however, insist this year’s elections will mark a departure from the past, pledging to prioritise transparency, accountability and effective representation.
“Students deserve better, and we are ready to work. This time we will ensure that what we promise is what we deliver,” one aspirant told Univers News.
Students say the upcoming elections won’t just be about campaign promises. Their vote will depend on whether aspirants can prove they’re committed to restoring trust and delivering real results.
