The Chief Executive Officer of the Liberian Enterprise Development Finance Company, Dr. Ambrose Gyemah Houphouet, has urged University of Ghana’s July 2026 PhD graduates to prioritise building meaningful relationships with people before they need their support.
His remarks follow concerns that some university students focus heavily on academics while paying little attention to developing relationships with friends, colleagues and professional networks.
Speaking as Guest Speaker during the first session of Day Two of the Congregation Ceremony, where 55 PhD students graduated, Dr. Houphouet encouraged students and graduates to place equal importance on relationships, education and personal character.
“An individual cannot succeed alone. Behind every successful person are friends, family, the people he builds relationships with, and people who create opportunities when it seems impossible,” he stated.
Dr. Houphet further urged graduates to treat everyone with respect, regardless of their position or status.
“Treat everyone with respect, not only the Vice Chancellor or the CEO. Qualifications open doors, but relationships and character keep the doors open,” Dr. Houphouet added.
