A Level 200 student of the University of Ghana, David Incoom Gyedu, stole the spotlight at this year’s GHABSA Week celebration with an innovative food packaging idea that blends tradition with modern convenience.
The week-long event, organized by the University of Ghana Biochemistry Students’ Association (GHABSA), took place from Monday, June 16 to Friday, June 20, 2025. The celebration highlighted themes of innovation, science, and community impact, with David’s entrepreneurial initiative standing out as a practical solution to an everyday challenge.
In an exclusive interview with Radio Univers, David—who is also the brains behind the hygienically packaged gari and sugar product—shared his motivation for creating the solution.
“I noticed the lack of convenient, hygienic, and affordable packaging for gari and sugar, especially for busy individuals like students and professionals on campus. Our product addresses this gap through its clean and convenient packaging, making it a better option for those on the go,” he said.
Driven by personal observation and a desire to offer a safer and more professional alternative, David has so far self-financed the business with savings and support from close family. While his prices are slightly above the market average, he explains that the cost reflects the value and health assurance the packaging provides.
“I’m currently self-funding this business with help from my siblings, and I’m exploring additional funding opportunities. The pricing is intentional—it reflects our commitment to hygienic packaging. The value we offer is clear, and we believe our target market understands and appreciates it.”
David also revealed that sales picked up during GHABSA Week and that he is actively collecting feedback on both the taste and packaging to fine-tune the product and strengthen its market appeal.
“We’ve started tracking overwhelmingly positive customer feedback. This input is helping us refine our product and marketing strategy as we look toward long-term sustainability,” he noted.
As GHABSA Week draws to a close, David’s story is a reminder that impactful innovation doesn’t always require massive capital or cutting-edge technology—sometimes, all it takes is insight, creativity, and a commitment to quality.
