Chair of the University of Ghana Governing Council, Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew, has led a high-level team on a tour of the university’s facilities on June 12, 2025.

The visit aimed to engage stakeholders and highlight ongoing innovations across the campus.

She was joined by council members and key officials, including Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, University Registrar Mrs. Emelia Agyei Mensah, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs Prof. Gordon Awandare, Provost of the College of Basic and Allied Sciences Prof. Mark Sandow Yidana, and others.

One of their stops was the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP). There, a researcher explained the team’s work on a portable virus detection device for use in rural areas.

“We produce our own reagent, chips, develop our own device and we are hoping that soon enough, we can put together something portable and suitable. So you can then customize it just for different things. Some you can use for detecting viruses like COVID-19 and running tests, the idea is to just build a platform that you can take to the field. You can take it to a village and test people without electricity, without any special knowledge or expertise,” the researcher said.

The delegation also visited Radio Univers, the university’s campus radio station. Station Manager, Dr Kwaku Botwe, shared concerns about low student awareness of the station.

“A lot of students don’t know there is a campus radio. Those who know, some of them don’t know it’s on campus, that it belongs to their university. One of the main reasons why they don’t listen is the evolution of technology,” he noted.

Another major stop was at the Digital Youth Village (DYV) project site, which remains under construction. The project, expected to be completed by December, aims to equip young people with digital and entrepreneurial skills.

“There was a collaboration between the University and the government of Ghana to provide the youth of this country with digital and entrepreneurial skills to provide employment opportunities. We believe if we train our youth in these skills, they will be able to rock shoulders with their peers in other countries,” said Mrs. Regina Afari Boateng, Head of Administration for the DYV.

The full tour covered several important university locations, including WACCBIP, the College of Basic and Allied Sciences, the School of Engineering Sciences, the College of Humanities, the College of Education, Radio Univers, the School of Performing Arts, on-campus student accommodation, the Noguchi Memorial Institute, WAGMC, and the UGMC.
