Hillary Philipa Nyarko has been elected General Secretary of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) after winning the run-off election held on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
Certified results released by the Electoral Commission show Nyarko secured 14,616 votes, representing 58.6% of the total valid ballots cast. Her contender, Augustina Naa Adaku Ashong, polled 10,327 votes (41.4%).
The contest went into a run-off after none of the candidates attained the required 50 per cent plus one vote in the initial election. In that round, Nyarko led with 10,800 votes (45.9%), followed by Ashong with 7,961 votes (33.9%), while Asempapa Setsofe Micheline garnered 4,757 votes (20.2%).
A total of 24,943 students participated in the decisive second round. According to the Electoral Commission, chaired by Nana Mensah Bonsu, the outcome reflects the constitutional mandate of fairness and transparency in the electoral process.
Nyarko’s victory positions her as the SRC’s General Secretary, responsible for record-keeping, correspondence, and coordinating the affairs of the union in the coming academic year.
