The University of Ghana Cooperative Credit Union has called on its members to approve an amount of over GHC 2 million to complete an ultra-modern 50-bed emergency facility.
The Management Board of the Union earlier estimated an amount of exactly GHC 2 million for the completion of the facility. However, the rise in the cost of goods and services has increased the amount needed to GHC 2,065,981.71
Speaking to UniversNews, the Chairperson of the Union, Professor Samuel Nana Yaw Simpson further indicated that the initial amount that the Union was seeking was requested last year and that the need for skilled personnel, among other essential things, has caused the amount needed to increase.
“This GH cedis 2,000,000 we asked for was in October last year (2021) and certainly, that is not enough. While the project was going on, you get to know other things that if they are added, are going to make the project ultra-modern. We had to engage the services of a biomedical engineer and other things that were not part of the initial plan. All this arises from the problem of inflation, the price of cement and other materials so the additional money that we requested was based on the new estimate that we need to be able to finish this project.” He said.
The Vice-Chairperson of the Union, Mr. Karimu Gbene Suglo assured the members of the union that constant visits from the authorities of the union will ensure accountability among the workers.
“With members from the core of the Union, former board members, and other executives constantly visiting the site, accountability is at its highest level,” He said.
The 50-bed emergency facility for the University Hospital project is the Credit Unions co-operate social responsibility, and it will serve the University community and aid in providing a reliable and efficient healthcare system.
According to the Management Board, the new estimate is needed to see to the completion of the project by December this year.
