The University of Ghana’s (UG) Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah, has indicated that administrative workload is expected to increase due to the absence of senior staff members following the ongoing strike action.

Her comments follow the declaration of an indefinite strike by the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, which has led to the withdrawal of several senior staff members from their posts.

Speaking to Univers News, Dr. Ameyaw-Buronyah noted that the strike is likely to have a negative impact on upcoming institutional ceremonies, as senior staff members play critical roles in their organisation.

“The ongoing strike by senior staff members is having a significant impact on preparations for major institutional ceremonies. With matriculation scheduled for Saturday, February 7, and the February congregation set to begin on Tuesday, February 10, organisers of these ceremonies say the absence of staff members who perform key administrative and technical functions has compelled management to activate alternative plans,” she said.

According to her, senior staff members are essential in supervising gowning processes, distributing certificates, coordinating performances, and setting up technical equipment in lecture halls. Their absence, she added, is creating serious operational challenges for the institution.
