The University Basic School (UBS), located on the University of Ghana’s Main Campus, has commemorated its 70th anniversary with a colourful celebration held on the school grounds on November 22, 2025, bringing together alumni, faculty, students, and distinguished guests.

The milestone event, themed “Nurturing Minds, Shaping Ghana’s Future,” highlighted the school’s transformative journey from a modest learning institution to one of the most respected model basic schools in the country.

Professor Sandow Mark, Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, representing the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, delivered the keynote address, commending UBS for its consistent dedication to academic excellence and the disciplined upbringing of its learners.

“UBS has produced generations of learners who have excelled not only academically but also in their contributions to society,” he said.

Professor Vera Fiador, Board Chair of UBS, expressed appreciation for the teachers’ dedication and hard work, noting that recognition alone is not enough. She appealed to alumni, corporate partners, and well-wishers to provide the necessary resources to support the school’s programmes and ensure that students continue to thrive.

“It’s time that we move from the gratitude that we feel in our hearts to the investment that you hold in your hands. The school needs your engagement, your expertise, and your resources,” she stated.

Over the years, UBS has produced notable alumni who have excelled in fields such as academia, business, governance, science, and the arts. Some of these illustrious alumni returned for the celebration to inspire the current generation of learners.

The celebration also featured cultural displays, musical performances, student awards, and dance presentations showcasing the school’s history and achievements over the decades.

Founded in 1955, UBS has, for seven decades, remained steadfast in its mission to nurture young minds who go on to make meaningful contributions to Ghana’s development.

Generations of learners have passed through its halls, carrying with them values of discipline, curiosity, and leadership that have left a lasting mark on the nation’s story.

The 70th anniversary served as both a celebration of past achievements and a call to action for continued excellence.
