Chairman of Ghana’s U23 national team, the Black Meteors Frederick Acheampong has announced that the team is scheduled to engage in a minimum of two international friendly matches prior to their participation in the 2023 U23 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Meteors are set to face Egypt’s U23 team on Thursday, June 15 at the Alexandria Stadium. Frederick Acheampong sees these friendly encounters as an opportunity to adequately prepare the team for the upcoming tournament.

Frederick explained the reason for choosing Egypt for the pre-tournament camping.

”We planned to do this camping in a different country, we looked around but we were not getting any team, because around this time almost all the leagues are on break. And then we [searched] and saw that most of the teams participating in the U23 AFCON are not also camping in the particular country we wanted to camp in, so we [chose to] camp in Egypt because the defending champions and participating member association Egypt are there. We then tried to engage them in a friendly and they agreed.”

He confirmed that the Black Meteors are also expected to play another friendly game before finally leaving for Morocco.

”You cannot play any better team than the defending champions who have also qualified for the tournament. After that, we will look to play another friendly before we leave Egypt for Morocco.”

The Black Meteors will reportedly play their final pre-tournament friendly on June 19. The tournament is set to kick off on June 24 and end on July 7, 2023. The Black Meteors will be camping in the Port City of Alexandria in the next few weeks, before leaving for Morocco.
