The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has firmly established that it will proceed with its planned nationwide strike or protest following an important meeting set for Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

This decision stems from the government’s failure to declare a state of emergency in response to the crisis of illegal mining, known as galamsey.

On September 11, the TUC warned the government that it would initiate a strike by the end of September if President Nana Akufo-Addo did not implement effective measures to mitigate the escalating environmental and economic damage caused by galamsey operations.

During Tuesday’s meeting, union leaders will finalize plans for the demonstration, aimed at pressuring the government to take stronger action against illegal mining.

TUC Chairman Bernard Owusu expressed with the media, that the union is fully prepared to carry out the planned strike or protest, depending on the results of the upcoming meeting.

He stressed the urgency for decisive government intervention in addressing galamsey.

“Yes, we are going to act on our threat based on the decisions that we will take God willing when we meet our structures and we will firm up our earlier decision either to go on strike or to embark on demonstration”

Regarding negotiations with the government, Mr. Owusu added, government has not take their requests into consideration.

“We have reiterated our position multiple times, and it seems the government has not been responsive. This is why we are convening on Tuesday to finalize our course of action.”
