As the Christmas season approaches, there is a common belief that businesses will experience a surge in sales. However, this year’s festive season in Madina market presents a different reality for some traders.
Recent reports indicate that rising living costs are putting pressure on some shoppers, causing many to tighten their belts. This shift is significantly altering the landscape of holiday spending, leading to a more cautious approach among consumers.
Speaking to Univers News, some traders at the Madina Market shared their sentiments about the decline in sales during this special season.
“Normally, when it’s time for Christmas, business booms, especially with the sales of foodstuffs and clothes. But this year’s Christmas is not ‘Christmasin’. Things are not going well compared to last year. Last year was far better. We made sales, and you are like, wow! This year, we come to work and sit like statues. I’m just hoping that next year, maybe, or hopefully, things will get better.”
“It’s not even looking like Christmas. We’ve opened our shop since morning, and no one has walked in to even ask of the price of an item. It’s quite bothering. ”
“The dollar issue has made everything very high so people are not coming. We traders go to the market with a lot of money but return with very little goods and we don’t even get people to come and buy because the system is hot. The people don’t have money to come and buy because the prices have been increased beyond normal “
