The Minister of Roads and Highways, Hon. Kwasi Amoako-Attah, has announced that the government will soon begin reconstruction of the Accra-Tema stretch of the motorway, as well as the reconstruction of the Tetteh Qwarshie, Apenkya Bridge, and Neoplan traffic light roads.

In December last year, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, revealed that work on the Accra-Tema Motorway Expansion Project was expected to start early this year after the government’s decision to procure the 27.7-kilometer project through the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) under a public-private partnership (PPP) arrangement.

Speaking in front of the Public Accounts Committee in Parliament on January 19, 2023, Hon. Kwasi Amoako-Attah stated that the Accra-Tema highway would have up to ten lanes and four interchanges when it is completed.

“Work on motorway will start and it comes under the project name of Reconstruction of the motorway. The project is not limited to the Accra Tema stretch of the motorway. It goes up to the Tetteh Qwarshie, Apenkya Bridge, and Neoplan traffic light. It is a major major work because the motorway itself, between Accra and Tema is going to have as many as four interchanges at various sessions. Some of the lanes will go up to ten, five on the other side.”

Hon. Kwesi Amoako-Attah also revealed that there would be a remodeling of some major roads like the Tetteh Qwarshie interchange, the Apenkya Bridge, and the construction of an interchange at Royal Fiesta.

He stated that it is to reduce the high traffic standstills in the country and assured the general public that once the work starts, it will be completed in no time.

“The same project will lead to the remodeling of the Tetteh Qwarshie interchange to deal with the current traffic situation being experienced at the Mall area. There will be another interchange at the Fiesta Royal Hotel traffic lights to deal with the traffic situation there and Apenkya Bridge is also going to be remodeled under the same program. So it’s a major thing, and I want to assure you that when it starts, work is going to be done.”
