TikTok to shut down music streaming service in November

TikTok has announced that it will be shutting down their music streaming service, TikTok Music, on November 28, 2024, just over a year after its launch.

Despite entering select markets such as Australia, Brazil, and Indonesia, the platform struggled to compete with established streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.

It was launched as a way to capitalize on the viral music culture of TikTok and the service failed to gain a significant foothold in the industry.

Rather than expanding TikTok Music, the company has decided to refocus on its “Add to Music” feature, which allows users to save songs discovered on TikTok to playlists on other major streaming platforms.

Users of TikTok Music are encouraged to transfer their playlists to other services by October 28, 2024, to avoid losing their collections. Refund requests must be submitted by November 28, after which all account information will be permanently deleted.

This closure marks TikTok’s latest setback in the music streaming space, following the previous failure of its Resso service. The company’s decision to discontinue TikTok Music indicates a shift in strategy as it aims to collaborate more with external platforms rather than operate its own streaming service.
