The Electoral commission of Ghana has released a press statement indicating that the deadline for the voters registration exercise will not be extended.

The limited voters registration exercise began on the 12th of September 2023 in all the 268 District offices of the Electoral commission and ended on the 2nd of October 2023. The exercise was undertaken to register citizens who are 18 years and above in preparation towards the 2024 elections.

“The Electoral commission wishes to inform the general public that the 2023 voters registration exercise ends at 5:00pm today, Monday 2nd of October 2023. The public is informed that the commission will not extend the voters registration exercise.”

The acting head of public affairs, Michael Boadi however assured the General public that citizens who were in the queue on or before 5:00pm on Monday 2nd October were to be registered on Tuesday October 3, 2023.

“The Commission, however, assures the General Public that arrangements have been made to ensure that eligible citizens who are in the queue on or before 5:00 pm today, are registered tomorrow, Tuesday, the 3rd of October, 2023. This arrangement will be extended only to eligible applicants in the queue at 5:00 pm today, Monday, the 2nd of October, 2023.”

Hence the registration officially ended on Tuesday, 3rd October 2023, with no future extension of the exercise announced for this year.

However, some personalities and political leaders have been calling for the extension of the registration exercise.

Their reasons are backed by the alleged short time allocated for the exercise, which was meant to target 1.35 million citizens.

The EC has however announced that the registration exercise will continue next year, 2024 for individuals who were not able to register this year.
