Technical Advisor to the Minister of Education, Professor George K.T. Oduro, has highlighted the inability of some teachers to integrate ICT into teaching and learning effectively.
Professor George K.T. Oduro provided these insights on Thursday, July 6, 2026, during the 10th anniversary celebration of the Department of Teaching and Learning, held in the university’s Great Hall.
Speaking at the event, Professor Oduro revealed that research conducted in five regions revealed significant gaps in the integration of ICT in classrooms, particularly among teachers in rural areas.
“For example, a recent deep dive research on the basic education framework conducted in five regions found that the majority of basic school teachers were experiencing difficulty integrating ICT into teaching and learning. A chunk of them are in the rural areas.”
He also noted that teachers with deeper ICT knowledge continue to face challenges due to limited access to technological devices in schools.
“Those who have a deeper know-how also raise issues about the accessibility and availability of technological devices in schools. Due to this reality, colleges of education must explicitly teach student teachers how to integrate ICT into teaching and learning.”
Professor Oduro further urged teacher trainees to master the foundations of learning through language, particularly the local language.
“Teacher trainees must therefore be encouraged to appreciate that they do not unlock their potential without first securing the foundations of learning through language.”
He explained that strong language foundations improve students’ comprehension and capacity for further learning.
“When students learn to read and listen to their language and speak at home, their comprehension develops, their confidence grows, and their capacity for further learning expands.”
