The Good Governance Promoters Of Ghana (GGP-GHANA) have prompted the Ghanaian government to strengthen national security to avoid the reoccurrence of coup d’états in the country.
The comment was made following Ghana’s decision to deploy its troops to Niger in response to ECOWAS urging its member states to establish a standby force as a potential solution to the crisis in Niger.
The crisis in Niger, which is mostly resulting from a recent coup in the country is just one of the few coups that have recently taken place in the West African Region alone, along with Mali and Burkina Faso.
The increase of junta forces in the region has raised a lot of concerns of governmental conflicts and the need for a stronger protection for each nations’ government.
Recognizing Ghana’s position in the ECOWAS amidst the surgence of coups in West Africa, the GGP-Ghana’s Deputy Director, Omanhene Nana Kofi Amankwaah, prodded the government into strengthening national security to avert the reoccurrence of coups in the country.
”If we make a mistake and we allow coup d’états all over West Africa, in the future, we would find ourselves in similar situations with dite conditions. So the security of this country is very, very important. No matter the amount of money that may be used in ensuring security, prevention is better than cure. Prevention will not cost you as much as you curing it.”
He also drew light on how ECOWAS member states are obliged to help address conflicts in fellow member states’ government.
Mr. Amankwaah insisted that a combined West African military effort would act as a deterrent to other states in the sub-region to avert more governmental conflicts.
“We have an obligation as ECOWAS countries and you cannot run away from it. ECOWAS member countries have a responsibility to address such situations and prevent coup attempts; the situation in Niger should be used as an example to discourage future coup d’ états attempts, considering the increasing frequency of such incidents in the region.”
