Senior Lecturer Dr. Kodzovi Akpabli-Honu, a member of the financial committee auditing the Sociology Students Association (SOSA), has clarified that the committee’s current audit of SOSA’s financial transactions is a routine process and not an investigation into alleged embezzlement by presidential candidate Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah, popularly known as Manuel Life.

This statement comes after the Vetting Committee of the University of Ghana Students Representative Council (UGSRC) Electoral Commission (EC) revealed that they have received a petition alleging embezzlement against Manuel Life.

The petition was filed by Deputy Organising Secretary of the Sociology Students’ Association (SOSA), Leslie David Semokor Kwasi accusing Manuel Life of “misappropriating GHS 19,760.00 out of GHS 29,950.00 funds during the first semester of the 2023/24 academic year.”

Speaking to Univers News, Dr. Akpabli-Honu emphasized that the audit is focused on scrutinizing the financial activities of SOSA as an executive body, with no specific allegations of embezzlement against Manuel Life.

“Let me reiterate that no single person has been accused. The EC wrote to me and I made it known to the EC in my response that I was surprised that a single person has been mentioned. The investigation was not directed at that single person. It is directed at SOSA executives. And I think it is the usual practice”, he stated.

Dr. Akpabli-Honu further emphasized that the audit’s focus is on the financial transactions of SOSA as a whole, and not targeted at any individual

“At the end of the investigation, if there is any adverse finding, I don’t think it would be directed to a single person. It would be directed
to all of the executives, maybe before someone can say no, he didn’t handle money and so on. But I know treasurers and financial secretaries handle money. Yeah, so I don’t know where these things are coming from,” he added.

The committee’s clarification aims to set the record straight and dispel any misconceptions about the audit’s purpose. The audit is a standard procedure to ensure transparency and accountability in SOSA’s financial dealings.
