Security expert, Richard Kumadoe has identified serious security weaknesses in the country contributing to an increase in kidnappings and cases of missing persons.
Speaking on Radio Univers’ prominent evening show, ‘Behind the Headlines’, the security specialist pinpointed failures in public security management, operational challenges in social welfare, and the transformation of communities into more cosmopolitan environments as vulnerabilities affecting national security.
Mr. Kumadoe also highlighted the lack of public education as a significant factor perpetuating these crimes.
“This is a failure in public safety and security management. It’s a problem of social welfare operations. Our communities are becoming more cosmopolitan, and newcomers may not respect Ghana’s hospitality culture, exploiting it. Economic hardships force families to leave their children with less care. There is also a lack of education in the public sphere.”
Regarding the police force, Mr. Kumadoe expressed concerns about issues such as objectivity and professionalism, which he believes contribute to the persistence of such crimes.
He urged a comprehensive review of the police force, advocating for a fair distribution of personnel nationwide to improve public safety and security measures.
“The police are the first line of protecting citizens and providing public safety assurances. We have issues with our police force—their structure, capacity, welfare, and conduct. Objectivity and professionalism have become concerns, and nobody is taking the time to thoroughly address these issues. When neglected, these problems come back to haunt us. I think it is high time we reevaluate our police force. An equal distribution of police force across the country will help.”
